Two Wings of the Bird

What makes a good leader? What then makes a great leader? Why do some people just stand out? What do leaders like Kennedy, Obama, Dali Lama, etc. bring forth that resonates so deeply with people?

First is their intellect and wisdom, these are table stakes. Much can me learned from school and books, but deep wisdom comes from experience. At this point in my life I have read all the books so I am pulled to elders that can share their actual experiences with me. Good leaders must have these skills of wisdom and often this is enough for them to have good careers.

But to be a world class leader you must add in compassion. The people that bring both wisdom and compassion are not just good, they are great. People will follow them into battle, into the unknown. The startling thing is that we spend 16+ years in school developing our minds, people go to grad schools for further intellectual development, yet there is almost no investment in compassion. It is actually a skill to be learned and can be easily and authentically brought forth. A good coach will recognize this and help the client with a variety of exercises to develop the compassion muscle. Often this is not a linear path we in the West anticipate, but an organic unfolding.

Think of the grumpy grandfather, full of life's experiences or the elder who shares not only his insights but his tender guidance for his family and community. Which one will you be?

Like a bird in flight it takes two wings to be a great leader, both wisdom and compassion. Also note that compassion is not just a sweet salve that is applied but a deep connection that can result in clear swift action.

The next time you think you have the right answer or wisdom, do a gut check and ask yourself what your heart says. Then listen closely...
